As a new vice principal Jess takes matters in her own hands and throws a school dance tonight on New Girl season 3, episode 22, “Dance.” Read our recap to find out what happened!

Here are the highlights from New Girl season 3, episode 22, “Dance”:

Fresh off her breakup from Nick, Jess pours herself into throwing a school dance. She’s determined to make the dance amazing for her students. At work she informs the teachers that she’s signed them all up as chaperones for the dance. None of them seem very pleased, except for Coach who is taking the role very seriously.

Nick and Schmidt enjoy a nice sweat out in the bathroom while talking about the breakup. He tells Schmidt that he’s trying to improve himself now that he’s single. He also confesses that he and Jess have been keeping Winston around when they’re together as a way to break any sexual tension.

When everyone shows up for the dance they find the doors have been locked and no one knows who put it there. Not wanting to wait around the teachers all drop out of being chaperones. So Jess calls in a favor from her friends to fill in for them.

Cece saves the day and breaks into the gym using a tire iron. Coach is convinced that one of the teachers put the lock there so that they could get out of having to chaperone. He also makes himself head of the chaperones and assigns them all roles. Coach says Nick isn’t chaperone material and sends him to watch the parking lot.

All the lights in the school go out in the middle of the dance. When Jess, Cece, and Coach go to turn them back on it’s clear someone messed with the breaker. They smell foul play and are convinced the biology teacher did it when he appears in the hallway eating a banana. When they question him the teacher tells Jess that none of the other teachers wanted the dance.

As it turns out, none of the teachers are the ones who sabotaged the dance. It was actually one of Jess’ students, Wendy, who didn’t want to go to the dance. She confiscates all of Wendy’s sabotage tools and she admits to wanting to stop the dance because none of the boys would dance with her. Trying to cheer up the girl, and probably talking about Nick, she tells Wendy that even though boys are dumb it’s all worth it.

In the parking lot, Nick finds two students hanging out by the buses. He doesn’t like it when they call him a chaperone and sets to prove himself by having whatever it is they’re drinking. He doesn’t hesitate when they bring out some fireworks either.

After breaking down on the dance floor, Winston finds himself the object of many girls attention. The giggling young girls start following him around in a pack.

Schmidt tries to stand up to a student being a bully and ends up getting teased himself. So he challenges the kid to a race outside. As it turns out the kid is also a cheater and makes a head start. Winston joins in as he’s being chased by girls, and Nick comes in being pushed in a shopping cart. Coach catches them and yells at them for being horrible chaperones.

Since the power is still out the guys make their own rap group to entertain the kids. Although they’re not actually very good at rapping it’s funny enough to work. Luckily one of the kids brings in a stereo so they can actually all dance. It probably wasn’t what Jess imagined for her first dance but it’s all worth it – right?
