Suddenly, Jess runs in to ruin the relaxing evening/explain that she has 20 minutes to make a life altering decision. She tells them how she’s been volunteering at the local museum and the curator, impressed with her work, has offered her a job.

So now Jess has a problem: Even though she’s always wanted to be a teacher, the school she works at sucks. To make matters worse she has less than 20 minutes to make a decision and the guys are her only help! Oh – and to make things even more stressful, Coach is excitedly timing Jess.

Winston claims himself to be the expert at changing careers since he is the one who quit professional basketball. He explains to Jess how his basketball coach barely let him play games, bumped him to the outdoor league, then he suffered a career ending leg injury.

When he proudly explains that was the point where he knew basketball wasn’t for him – everyone is confused. His friends make him realize that he was forced to stop playing basketball and that he also never made the decision to start playing either. Winston questions his whole life.

With Winston being no help, Schmidt steps in to tell his own story. He explains how in college he volunteered as a Candy Striper in hospitals helping out the sick. There, the boyfriend of his crush advised that real men don’t volunteer – they work (in marketing).

Not being able to get a job in marketing, Schmidt starting working at a Christmas Tree farm. There he excelled at selling trees and caught the attention of the Christmas Tree king, who took him under his wing. Sadly, his mentor died but gave him the advice that money is everything.

Schmidt is then outraged to learn that the museum job pays more and yet Jess still isn’t sure about what to do. He questions whether or not she knows the difference between less and more. To defend herself – Jess explains that she really wants to love what she does.

Coach steps in to give Jess advice saying he’s the most qualified because he’s named after his career. He also tells the story of how he was actually given the name Coach by Nick and Schmidt.

The moral of his story – be who you are and do what you do. Which totally confuses both Jess and Winston. So Coach gives up.

Nick tells Jess to finish talking about her first day teaching, which has her remembering the first student she helped. Who, it turns out, ended up becoming so good at math that he used it to embezzle money and being wanted by the FBI.

When she feels worse he tells her about how being in law school made him miserable. In a search to find a place where he enjoyed himself he started studying in the bar. One day, when the bartender over served himself, he stepped up to the plate and found his true calling.

None of this helps Jess and she’s still confused. Luckily, Cece drops in and tells an adorable story about how she and Jess met. And that she was actually Jess’ first student.

This is enough for Jess to realize that she does want to stick with teaching after all! But the next day at work she realizes she’s still not happy with her job. After fixing another one of the principal’s messes the other teachers beg her to become principal.

And so Jess has a new career goal. And Nick has a new fetish!

Winston also made a career decision and quit his job at the sports radio. But still can’t make a decision about what drink to order on his own. Meanwhile, Nick is training Cece to bartend. Nick also proves that he’s not a bum after all – he took his bar exam and passed.
