New Girl creator Liz Meriwether reveals the inspiration for last night’s episode “Virgins,” the big Nick and Jess scene, and what’s to come for the pair! SPOILER ALERT!

Liz Meriwether, New Girl creator and executive producer, wrote last night’s episode “Virgins,” In which fans saw a major development between Nick and Jess. Even though the roommates had decided they’d be better off as friends, they just couldn’t seem to help themselves.

And this happened.

Meriwether revealed to E! Online that the writers hadn’t planned out exactly when Nick and Jess would be sleeping together. Rather they had an idea in their minds when they wanted it to happen and it ended up fitting well into the episode.

She also revealed that they were a bit hesitant at having the virginity episode be the one with such an important scene between the characters. Though, in the end, it ended up being really fitting.

Meriwether explains, “It turned out to make the sex feel really important and emotional for them after having seen where they were in the past and where they are now.” Adding that it ended up being better than any of the writers expected.

The executive producer also shed light to last scene which showed Jess and Nick lying in bed thinking about what had just happened. “I think one of our writers pitched it like, ‘What if they’re just lying there for 30 seconds and there’s no dialogue.’ It felt really risky and fun, but also really real.”

Although the end could have been potentially awkward it ended up making the scene feel authentic. Meriwether thought having Nick and Jess being silent in the end would make it more real to the audience.

“I thought it was a really cool way of ending it because you can see all of those emotions go across their faces,” She said. “It felt like that horrible moment that happens in real life where you suddenly realize what you’ve done and what is it going to mean.”

The next episode “Winston’s Birthday” will pick up the following day from “Virgins,” meaning the fans won’t miss a moment of the aftermath. Meriwether teases that fans will see what sex means for each of the characters. We’ll see how it both deepens and complicates their relationship going forward.
