Get ready for another G.I. Joe movie — this time featuring the undercover specialist and spy, Chuckles.

The Hollywood Reporter reported earlier today that Paramount and Hasbro are teaming up to bring another G.I. Joe movie to theaters.

Though the G.I. Joe franchise hasn’t been as lucrative as other franchises based on toylines, such as the Transformers series and the Lego Movie films, the franchise has still grossed a cool $675 million worldwide off of two films.

The live-action G.I. Joe franchise kicked off in 2009 with G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, a movie starring Channing Tatum and Marlon Wayans. Channing Tatum made a brief appearance in the 2013 sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which mainly had Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson at the forefront along with a pretty hefty cameo from Bruce Willis.

The franchise has been quiet since that 2013 release, but broke that silence in 2018 when Paramount Pictures announced the movie Snake Eyes, a spin-off film set in the G.I. Joe world which would center around the popular character of Snake Eyes.

With that movie currently in preproduction and eyeing an Oct. 16, 2020 release date, Paramount and Hasbro have also announced this second G.I. Joe film.

The studios have tapped Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec to write the script. Though the pair is known mostly for their work on TV shows like Alias, Life on Mars and Zoo, they have likewise worked on the most recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

As the movie is still in the very early stages of being greenlit, not much is known about the plot or which characters who will appear. However, while it has been described as an ensemble piece, we do know that the character Chuckles — who has not appeared in any G.I. Joe movies yet — will make an appearance.

Chuckles is a well-liked character from the toyline best known for his undercover and infiltration work.

The announcement of these two films signals Paramount’s intention to rebuild the G.I. Joe franchise, aiming to produce both ensemble pieces focusing on the main team and a spinoff series of films focusing on individual character.
