You thought the Ilvermorny Houses would be the only big news this week for Harry Potter fans? Not so fast! A new Fantastic Beasts trailer appears to be on its way.
Update (July 1): The “new” trailer running with The BFG this weekend is actually the new Fantastic Beasts featurette released online last week. It’s a great preview featuring a nice interview with J.K. Rowling, so we’re glad to see it’s running in theaters.
Original story (June 28): We spotted rumors of a new Fantastic Beasts trailer earlier this week on Twitter, when a couple people claimed that a new preview would be attached to Disney’s The BFG this weekend. I held off on writing about it in case someone just made up the leak in Photoshop, but now better evidence about the existence of a new trailer has surfaced.
Alberta, Canada’s Film Ratings Board — an always-trusty source for official trailer news — added “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Trailer #3)” to their ratings database today, June 28. This means that a trailer was recently completed, and that the film board has watched it. The board always posts these ratings on their website in advance of a trailer’s release so the public knows how appropriate (or inappropriate) the preview is.
According to the ratings board, the trailer clocks in at two minutes and 11 seconds, which is nine seconds shorter than the last Fantastic Beasts trailer released in April. They’ve given it a “G” rating, meaning there’s no chance Newt is cursing up a storm in this trailer as his beasts cause havoc.
As I speculated this morning on Twitter, I suspect that this new trailer will have a reference or two to Ilvermorny. The fact that Pottermore released this Ilvermorny information today — three days before The BFG opens with a rumored Fantastic Beasts trailer — certainly suggests we’ll be hearing about the North American Wizarding School in the next preview.
Trailers are typically released online in the days leading up their theatrical premiere, and time is obviously running out before Friday. Unless this is going to be a theater exclusive (seems unlikely in this era of cell phone cameras), we should expect to see it online by Thursday.
The last Fantastic Beasts trailer was a thrill to watch. Not only did we catch a glimpse of Newt’s Hufflepuff scarf, but we also heard the words “Hogwarts” and “Dumbledore” uttered in a Wizarding World movie for the first time since 2011.
