Brand new footage from the highly anticipated Ender’s Game film just debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, and was followed by a panel with stars Asa Butterfield and Harrison Ford.

The brand new footage is the first we are seeing of this adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s bestselling novel since the Ender’s Game trailer debuted in May.

The Ender’s Game Comic-Con panel featured stars Asa Butterfield (Ender), Harrison Ford (Colonel Graff) and Hailee Steinfeld (Petra), along with the film’s producer Roberto Orci and director Gavin Hood.

‘Ender’s Game’ Comic-Con footage

The footage was a Comic-Con exclusive trailer that showcased almost all of the Ender’s Game characters. A voice over from Harrison Ford opened the trailer, over the top of images of destruction on Earth, as he tells Ender “You were bred for this.”

The central section of the trailer focused on Ender’s experiences in the battle simulator. Steinfeld is also present in one of these scenes, as the adult figures look on. Ender’s Game is a difficult book, but fans will not be disappointed with this interpretation of the Battle School.

The trailer gives us glimpses of Steinfeld as Petra and Breslin as Valentine. We also see Sir Ben Kingsley as Mazer Rackham, who looks to be a more sympathetic character than Ford’s Graff, who appears to be more openly manipulative.

At the end of the trailer, Graff is asked “When it’s over, what will be left of the boy?” His response perfectly summarises the theme of the entire film: “What does it matter, if there’s nothing left of us all?”

’Ender’s Game’ panel recap

The Ender’s Game cast members took audience questions following the trailer. Ford explained that he “was drawn to the complex moral issues that are involved in the military” when accepting the role. He went on to describe his character, Colonel Graff, as “not so much his [Ender’s] mentor, as his manipulator.”

When asked if he was intimidated to work with such respected actors, Butterfield joked that “as any actor would, you get over the fact that you are acting against Han Solo, however amazing that is.”

The director and producer also addressed the controversy surround Ender’s Game author Orson Scott Card, who recently made headlines when he changed his opinion on gay marriage, calling it “moot.”

When asked about Card’s involvement in the film, producer Roberto Orci deflected by stating “we decided to use the attention that was on us to unequivocally support Lionsgate’s statement in support of LGBT rights.”

Ford was also asked the inevitable Star Wars and Indiana Jones questions. He deflected most of them, but when asked if Han Solo would be a good soldier in Colonel Graff’s army, he commented that “I don’t think Han Solo would be good as a soldier in anybody’s army.”

Ender’s Game is set for release on November 1 2013.
