Ever since it was announced that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvil would be ending their run on Doctor Who this season, speculation has abounded regarding who the replacement companion will be.

According to Doctor Who TV:

BBC entertainment news’ Lizo Mzimba wrote: “Looks like there’ll be some big news announced at a press conference tomorrow morning!”

Daily Mirror TV Editor, Mark Jefferies added: “BBC source has confirmed to me they will unveil new Doctor Who assistant tomorrow. She is “pretty” but “not household name.”

It makes a certain degree of sense for the BBC to come out with the information now relatively early on in the filming process. It has already widely been discussed that Gillan and Darvil will meet whatever their fate is midseason. No doubt, the BBC would have a tough time keeping underwraps an actress who repetitively showed up for call on set. Also, owning to the fact that a good deal of Doctor Who has traditionally been shot in public view in and about Cardiff, this said actress would be in obvious public limelight as well. In short, better to break their own news than to have the tabloids do it for them.

All of this will make the pending Official Doctor Who Convention very interesting. No doubt fans will try to drag some information about this new companion out of showrunner Steven Moffat on the days he attends. Moffat has previously stated that this new companion will come from an unexpected place, leaving fans to puzzle out exactly what that place is.

Who do you think this new companion might be assuming the statement, “She is pretty but not household name” is correct?
