A new Doctor Strange featurette introduces Benedict Cumberbatch’s supernatural superhero, and hypes up Mads Mikkelsen’s villain.

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that Doctor Strange‘s visual effects are out of this world.

In a new featurette from Marvel, lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch calls it a “great cinematic ride,” which is probably the most apt description of the controversy-stricken superhero movie we can think of.

In the video we get the entire origin of Doctor Strange, as told by Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton and Rachel McAdams:

But buried among the catchy one-liners and Inception b-roll footage (jk, it’s all a-roll obviously) is what is perhaps the most interesting aspect of this featurette: The subtle attempts to hype up the movie’s villains.

It’s no secret that, while Marvel’s superhero movies are generally successful, they suffer from the same limitations as DC when it comes to the villains.

Superhero villains tend to be either forgettable, ridiculous or just not that scary — but perhaps Mads Mikkelsen’s Kaecilius can change that?

Kevin Feige, at least, seems keen to make audiences believe it, saying, “We’re excited about the villains in this film,” and describing them as “people who become seduced by what they find on the other side.”

What seems to work best for Marvel is to give the villain a personal tie to the hero. The studio’s only really memorable adversaries, Loki and the Winter Soldier, were intrinsically tied to Thor and Captain America, respectively, in many ways describable as the heroes’ darker halves. (Ultimately, of course, Bucky is not a villain at all — but that is a discussion for another day.)

Doctor Strange will probably come to view Kaecilius as a worst case scenario for himself: What Strange himself could become if he lets himself be seduced by the darkness.

But will it be enough to make Kaelicius and his adversaries stand out from the crowd? We’ll find out when Doctor Strange premieres on November 4, 2016.
