Disney and Pixar are gearing up to return to the world of Soul with the brand new short, 22 vs. Earth.

Fans of Disney and Pixar’s Soul who remain curious as to why new soul 22 has so much distain for Earth will soon have their question answered.

On Wednesday (April 21), the studios announced that they’ll be exploring why it is that 22 doesn’t care for Earth in the form of a brand new animated short.

Titled 22 vs. Earth, the short picks up with 22 long before she meets Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) in the animated feature film.

Directed by Kevin Nolting, the short finds 22 (once again voiced by Tina Fey) defying the rules of The Great Before, refusing to go to Earth, and enlisting the help of five other souls to rebel against the status quo. As her cohort’s activities lead to unexpected results, 22 finds herself coming to some surprising revelations about the meaning of life.

In a statement announcing the new animated short, Nolting revealed that during the making of Soul, the team talked a lot about why a new soul might not want to go to Earth.

“It didn’t ultimately belong in that movie,” said Nolting of the discussion. “22 vs. Earth was a chance to explore some unanswered questions we had about why 22 was so cynical. As a fairly cynical person myself, it felt like perfect material.”

As for the new souls that’ll be joining 22 in the short prequel, Nolting said:  “The other new souls are what 22 once was before she took another path—purely innocent, blank slates to be guided by the counselors in their mostly uneventful journey to the earth portal. 22 sees an opening in that and attempts to guide them herself into her way of thinking.”

Disney and Pixar’s new animated Soul short, 22 vs. Earth debuts via Disney+ on April 30.
