With less than a week to go, news clips from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1 drop tantalizing clues about the premiere.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1 will air next Tuesday on ABC – and it can’t come quickly enough! Scenes from the episode, titled “Shadows,” have been released on various platforms, and offer hints at how the season premiere will play out.

Yesterday, ABC made an early scene from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1 available on their website. The two-minute clip is viewable now for subscribers to several cable providers; for other fans, the sneak peek will go up on Friday.

If you are not able to view the clip yet, highlight below for a synopsis of this early scene, which features several key new characters.

Skye, May, and Trip are spying on an illicit transaction between a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Isabelle Hartley (Lucy Lawless) and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood.) Skye is closest to the action, but May tells her not to engage until the deal is done.

The former agent is attempting to sell S.H.I.E.L.D. intelligence to Hartley and Hunter. Hunter is skeptical that the information – a file with a picture of a black box – is worth all that money. The agent says that this box was the only item in S.H.I.E.L.D. containment with a Level 10 classified file – it is clearly valuable, but finding the thing will be up to Hartley and Hunter.

Just before an argument breaks out between the mercenaries, the meeting is interrupted by a third party. Carl “Crusher” Creel storms the scene, murders the agent, and steals the file; he appears to be completely impervious to bullets.

May, Trip, and Skye engage, saving Hunter and Hartley from the other guards. Hartley is irritated, but accepts the news that they were the backup. She reports to someone on a phone, asking for orders.

“Go dark,” Coulson says, looking grimly out of an old-fashioned window.

Another sneak peek from “Shadows” was released earlier this week on iTunes. Presumably taken from later in the episode, the clip offers hints on how the team’s relationships – and Skye’s role in the crew – have changed since the season finale.

The official synopsis for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1 keeps the danger front and center.

“Coulson and his team are now wanted fugitives with limited resources,” ABC says, “But that’s not stopping them from keeping the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere. However, with new members they hardly know, will S.H.I.E.L.D. ever be trusted again?”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2, episode 1, “Shadows,” will air on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
