Tupac Shakur and Broadway aren’t two things that most people would usually associate together but the late rapper’s music might soon be heading to Broadway during the 2013-2014 season!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a developmental workshop is currently underway in New York City for a new musical entitled Holler If Ya Hear Me which was inspired by the works of the late rap superstar.

The play, which is currently being targeted for Broadway, already boasts some big names attached to it, including Kenny Leon who has been tapped to direct the musical.

Leon himself is no stranger to Broadway and is particularly known for his work on plays such as A Raisin In the Sun with Sean Combs, Fences with Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, and The Mountain Top with Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett.

Additionally, Holler If Ya Hear Me will feature a book by Todd Kriedler and is currently being choreographed by Tony Award winning choreographer, Wayne Cilento whose work has been seen both in Wicked and on The Who’s Tommy.

Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur is also acting as lead producer on the project alongside Eric L. Gold, Chunsoo Shin, and Jessica Green.

Though the musical is inspired by Tupac’s music, the play itself will not act as a biography and will instead center around an original story that uses Shakur’s music to further the plot along.

According to the official press release, Holler If Ya Hear Me is set in a present day industrial city in the Midwest and follows the trials and tribulations faced by two childhood friends and their families.

Tupac Shakur (better known by his stage name, 2Pac) was born in the East Harlem neighborhood of New York City and burst onto the rap scene in the early 90s.
Though Shakur was a notable rapper and actor, the late musician is probably just as well known for being vocally involved with the East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry swirling among rappers and record label producers in the mid-90s.

Though Shakur died in 1996 by way of a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Nev., he continues to be known as one of the best-selling recording artists in the world, having sold over 75 million albums worldwide as of 2010.
