V Wars, Netflix’s upcoming vampire drama starring Ian Somerhalder, dropped its first trailer for us today.

Looks like Ian Somerhalder just can’t quite stay away from the world of vampires.

The actor, perhaps best known for his eight year stint as everyone’s favorite vampire bad boy/sometimes hero Damon Salvatore on The CW’s The Vampire Diaries, will now be returning to another TV show about vampires.

Except this time, Somerhalder will be playing for the opposite team, as he’s been cast as the human trying to understand what’s happening and keep the vampires at bay.

Check out the trailer for the upcoming show below!

The 10-episode series is based on Jonathan Maberry’s best-selling comic series of the same name and will see Somerhalder playing human Dr. Luther Swann. Swann becomes swept up in a global disaster when a mysterious disease transforms his best friend, Michael Fayne (played by Adrian Holmes), into a murderous predator who feeds on other humans.

As the disease spreads and more people are transformed, society fractures into opposing camps pitting normal people against the growing number of these ‘vampires.’ Swann races against time to understand what’s happening, while Fayne rises to become the powerful underground leader of the vampires.

The newly-released trailer likewise featured a surprise appearance from Somerhalder’s wife, Nikki Reed, playing what seems to be his character’s love interest. EW reported that Reed’s character is named Rachel, but any further details are being kept close to the chest for now.

In an interview with Hollywood Life, Somerhalder said that “V-Wars provides a space for everything I couldn’t do on Vampire Diaries. We get to tackle true social issues and intertwine them into a fictional narrative that feels so real. The idea that a biological pathogen kept hidden and dormant is exposed because of rapid climate change and glacial ice melt wreaks havoc on the world is not that far-fetched, unfortunately.”

V Wars begins streaming Dec. 5 on Netflix.
