Netflix’s Selena: The Series — Part 1 gave us our first look at The Walking Dead’s Christian Serratos as Selena Quintanilla.

While it’s been nearly a year since Netflix announced it would be creating a scripted series based on the life of Selena Quintanilla, we just got our first casting news a little over two months ago.

The scripted series will feature actors Ricardo Chavira and Gabriel Chavarria as key members of the Quintanilla family.

Chavira, who many may know from his work on Desperate Housewives, will play the singer’s father, Abraham, in the upcoming bio-series. Abraham is described as “a savvy businessman determined to achieve the American dream.” Chavarria, from The Purge, has signed on to portray the late singer’s brother, A.B. Quintanilla. The casting announcement describes A.B. as “the mastermind behind the music; playing bass guitar, producing and writing songs for Selena.”

We also learned that The Walking Dead star Christian Serratos will play Selena Quintanilla, and today Netflix dropped a short behind-the-scenes clip — and brief scene — of Serratos in one of Selena’s most iconic outfits.

Selena: The Series is a coming-of-age story that focuses on the singer, songwriter, model, actress and fashion designer who became one of the most beloved Mexican-American entertainers. After launching her music career in 1980, Selena was dubbed the “Tejano Madonna,” and would go on to win a Grammy in 1994 for best Mexican/American album, becoming the first female Tejano artist to do so.

She ranks as the best-selling female artist in Latin music history, with more than 65 million albums sold worldwide. The singer was shot and killed in 1995 by her best friend and the manager of her fan club, who was later found to have been embezzling money from the star’s company. Yolanda Saldivar was convicted of murder and is currently serving a life sentence.

The series is being made in cooperation with the late singer’s family who serve as executive producers, with part 1 premiering on Netflix sometime in 2020.
