Netflix’s Messiah is a show that posits what might happen if a modern day Messiah appeared on our doorsteps — and whether he’d be hailed as a savior or a conman.

Get ready to start off your New Year with a dose of the most high.

Well, maybe.

Netflix today dropped a trailer for its new show Messiah, which is pegged as a geopolitical thriller in which a CIA agent investigates a man that thousands believe to be the Messiah.

The official synopsis reads:

When CIA officer Eva Geller (Michelle Monaghan) uncovers information about a man (Mehdi Dehbi) gaining international attention through acts of public disruption, she begins an investigation into his origins. As he continues to cultivate followers who allege he’s performing miracles, the global media become increasingly beguiled by this charismatic figure. Geller must race to unravel the mystery of whether he really is a divine entity or a deceptive con artist capable of dismantling the world’s geopolitical order.

Messiah is created by Michael Petroni, who wrote the screenplay for the adaptation of Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief and is directed by James McTeigue, known best for his work on V for Vendetta and Kate Woods of Rectify. Petroni and McTeigue join Andrew Deane, Mark Burnett, and Roma Downey as executive producers.

Messiah stars Michelle Monaghan from True Detective and The Path as CIA agent Eva Geller and Mehdi Dehbi as the titular (maybe?) Messiah.

Joining the two will be Tomer Sisley as an Israeli intelligence officer, John Ortiz as a Texas preacher, Sayyid El Alami as a Palestinian refugee, and Jane Adams as the journalist who covers the story. They will likewise be joined by Stefania LaVie Owen, Melinda Page Hamilton, Wil Traval, Fares Landoulsi, Dermot Mulroney, and Beau Bridges.

Netflix will release all 10 episodes of Messiah on January 1, 2020.
