Netflix’s upomcing Grendel series adaptation has found its star, in addition to locking in its principal cast!

On Tuesday (September 14), Netflix announced that Katy Keene vet Abubakr Ali has officially signed on to star in its upcoming Grendel series adaptation.

Based on the popular, award-winning comic book series by Matt Wagner, the series centers on a gifted fencer, writer, and assassin named Hunter Rose.

Over the course of the story, we follow along as Hunter (who goes by the alias Grendel) seeks to avenge the death of a lost love, and goes to war with New York’s criminal underworld only to come to a chilling conclusion: why beat them, when you can join them?

For his part, Ali will take on the titular role of Grendel/Hunter Rose.

Others set to star opposite Ali in the series adaptation include Brittany Allen as Annabelle Wright, Julian Black Antelope as Argent, Kevin Corrigan as Barry Palumbo, Emma Ho as Stacy Palumbo, Andy Mientus as Larry Stohler, Jaime Ray Newman as Jocasta Rose, Erik Palladino as Teddy Ciccone, and Madeline Zima as Liz Sparks.

Behind the camera, Supernatural and Resident Evil vet Andrew Dabb serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer on the Netflix Original.

Additional executive producers on the show include Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson (The Umbrella Academy), Keith Goldberg (The Umbrella Academy), Chris Tongue (Polar), and original comic book creator Matt Wagner.

Speaking to today’s big casting news, Wagner said: “I’m excited to see Abubakr Ali bring the character of Grendel/Hunter Rose to life— he has the charisma, style, and vital edginess that I’ve been envisioning in the role for years.”

Netflix has ordered eight episodes of the Grendel series to start, though there’s currently no word on when we might expect to see the series debut via the online streaming giant.
