Netflix is streaming the 2004 romance classic, The Notebook, and fans have noticed that the ending was inexplicably changed by the streamer.

Romance fans have been anticipating the Netflix arrival of the ’04 romance hit, The Notebook, in the U.K. However, once the film hit the streaming service, fans began to notice that the movie ended very differently than the version they saw in movie theaters back in the early aughts. Heads up: there will be major spoilers for The Notebook ahead.

Nicholas Sparks novels (and, by extension, the movie adaptations that follow) are notoriously sad, and The Notebook is no exception. In the original version, we see Noah and Allie together in a nursing home as Allie fights dementia. The film ends with the two dying in bed together, locked in an embrace.

According to Mirror, the Netflix UK version decided to make the ending a bit less tragic, ending the movie just after Allie’s dementia fog lifts and she recognizes Noah. The movie fades to black as the two hold hands on Allie’s bed.

Several news outlets have reached out to Netflix U.K. for comment on the baffling change, but they have yet to respond. The Notebook will hit Netflix in the U.S. on March 1, and it stands to reason that the “Netflix Cut” is the version stateside fans will also find in their queues.

It’s unclear what Netflix was thinking by quietly changing the ending of one of the most beloved modern romance flicks (despite many of us spotting some of the problematic elements in Allie and Noah’s relationship as the years have passed). If they must keep their unique ending, hopefully Netflix will make the original ending available to viewers as well as their more uplifting ending, so we can all get in a cathartic ugly cry if we need one.

The Notebook is currently streaming on Netflix in the U.K. and will stream in the U.S. starting March 1.
