In honor of the last hints of summer, I present you all with a list of five Netflix titles to binge on while you wait for Labor Day to arrive.

It is that time of year once again. Soon summer will be ending. It doesn’t matter if you are still in school or you’re working a steady job to support a family of five, there is a solemn feeling that permeates the hot, humid air as September approaches.

Try these five shows on Netflix…

5. ‘Fringe’

It was a bitter and cold day when Fringe aired its final episode back in January, but fear not. Fringe is now available to watch on Netflix. Fringe may never have been a smash hit, but it was more than just your average sci-fi show. It could be comedic, dramatic, and downright crazy, but at its heart Fringe was a character driven sci-fi procedural. Every season was full of laughs and tears…and disturbing imagery. You fall in love with the characters immediately from the no nonsense Olivia to the all nonsense Walter. The nonstop excitement of the show will keep you warm as the temperatures cool outside. So, grab some Redvines and get ready to be lost in not one, not two, but three-ish….. Well, get lost in the many universes (and timelines) that make up Fringe.

4. ‘Parks and Recreation’

Sci-fi not your thing? I present to you Parks and Recreation. Made in a similar style to The Office, Parks and Recreation follows the day-to-day activities of Leslie Knope and company as they manage the crazy happenings in Pawnee, Indiana. Each episode is filled with rapid fire dialogue and laughs. It is absolutely impossible to not love at least one character on this show. Libertarian and department head Ron Swanson is a real man’s man, while shoeshine Andy is lovably dense. April’s apathetic attitude plays brilliantly against Leslie’s gungho optimism. So, why not take a late summer vacation and become an honorary citizen of Pawnee: First in Friendship, Fourth in Obesity.

3. ‘Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)/Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood’

How many of you will not watch anime because Pokemon, Naruto, or Yu-Gi-Oh left a bad aftertaste? Well, here is an anime I dare you not to get addicted to absolutely immediately. Fullmetal Alchemist follows brothers Edward and Alphonse as they search for the legendary philosohper’s stone to fix their torn bodies after a futile attempt to raise their mother from the dead. Along the way, these two brothers meet interesting characters and uncover an evil that does not just threaten their search for the stone, but the lives of an entire country.

This series has anything and everything you could want: great humor, legitimate horror, memorable characters, impressive action, and heartbreaking moments. Both series are amazing and have topnotch animation, but they do not follow the same plot all the way through. Watch the 2003 version first and then go back and watch Brotherhood. Ed’s hothead and Mustang’s flame alchemy will keep things burning. A word to the wise: the Law of Equivalent exchange does not just apply to alchemy. The cost of watching this series is your heart, and the philosopher’s stone can’t get it back for you.

2. ‘Supernatural’

So, you like the idea of a series about brothers, but still won’t watch anime? Well, how about Supernatural? All the brotherly love, comedy, and drama without the animation (although Supernatural does have its own anime series that covers the first two seasons of the live action version). Supernatural follows the Winchester boys as they travel across the country ganking demons and making ghosts wish they’d never died.

The show takes the urban legends we tell around campfires and brings them to life. Things that go bump in the night aren’t your thing? That’s okay, because monsters are only one set of obstacles the brothers take on. There’s also angels, the devil, alternate dimensions, and sleazy hotels to contend with as well, and that’s not even mentioning the ladies they meet along the way. So hop in the Metallicar (Dean’s sexy 1967 Chevy Impala), turn on some classic rock and head on an end-of-summer road trip down the Highway to Hell.

1. ‘Breaking Bad’

Do I really need to convince you to watch this show? The entire internet has been talking of nothing else since a month before the final half-season even began airing. So, now’s the time to catch up with chemistry teacher turned drug emperor of ABQ, Walt White. Every person I have ever spoken to about the show admits that they started watching by binge viewing the entire thing on Netflix, so you should feel no shame in wasting the next five days or so watching Walt and former student Jesse infiltrate then dominate the meth culture of New Mexico.

The desert atmosphere coupled with the high tension will extend your summer for at least as long as it takes you to marathon the series. Go grab your chemistry sets and get addicted to Breaking Bad. Warning: withdrawal may occur between completion of the series on Netflix and the next episode to be aired on AMC.

What do you recommend?

So, there you have it. Five shows to end your summer the right way… By binge watching, becoming addicted, joining a new fandom, and then falling into a depression when you finish. And remember that Doctor Who does not return until the 50th anniversary special and Sherlock doesn’t return until…someday…maybe. This list is just my opinion and I know that there are dozens of great shows on Netflix, so leave a comment and let everyone else know of any treasures I left out. Who knows? Maybe you’ll convince me to get addicted to something new too.
