Netflix has revolutionized how we watch television, and their new plan, Ultra, aims to change the game yet again–for $16.99 a month.

A new plan is rolling out for Netflix users that would offer users Ultra HD streaming for a larger monthly fee. Happily, if you’re not interested in paying more each month, the price increase will not be a mandatory increase rolled out to every user, only those who opt-in.

Netflix is experimenting with a new service called Ultra, rolling out two test versions for users. For the first, should you decide to take on the $16.99 a month plan, will get you four Ultra HD streams while the normal $13.99 Premium plan users will only get two UHD streams. The second Ultra test offer would allow both Ultra and Premium users to have access to four concurrent Ultra HD streams, but only Ultra users would get access to high dynamic range (or HDR) content that has bolder colors and higher contrast.

So what’s the point of all of this? Netflix wants to explore how many of their users are more concerned about the price of the streaming service, and how many users are more concerned about getting the highest quality images and colors in their Netflix experience.

According to Variety, not every Netflix user will be given the option to try out the Ultra option. And, of course, they may scrap the Ultra option entirely if the test users don’t seem interested in the new, more expensive tier.

It’s nice to hear that Netflix is exploring what is most important to their users, and not simply rolling out a more expensive service at a price no one cares to pay for perks no one wants. Every Netflix price increase is often met with a lot of consternation on the internet, understandably, so this test might help the streamer understand more about what their users want, which can only improve the service.

So if you’re interested in paying more each month for brighter colors and a higher contrast in your streaming sessions, keep an eye on your Netflix account to see if you’ll get a chance to try the new Ultra tier.
