Lupita Nyong’o’s Sulwe is officially getting the adaptation treatment over at Netflix!

In 2019 Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o made her publishing debut by releasing a children’s book with a powerful message titled Sulwe.

Now, Netflix is looking to bring Nyong’o’s book to life in a pretty exciting way.

On Thursday (February 18), Netflix announced that it is officially in the process of developing a brand new animated musical feature film based off of Nyong’o’s #1 New York Times best selling book.

Sulwe tells the story of the titular young girl, who is described as a having skin the color of midnight. She is darker than everyone she knows. All she wants is to be beautiful and bright. One night, Sulwe is visited by a shooting star sent by the Night, and embarks on a magical journey where she learns the eye-opening story of the sisters Night and Day.

Nyong’o herself is involved behind the scenes on the project. Specifically, the Oscar winner will be serving as a producer on the adaptation.

In a statement announcing Netflix’s forthcoming adaptation of her best selling children’s book, the actress spoke of why the story is so near and dear to her heart.

“Growing up, I was uncomfortable in my dark skin. I rarely saw anyone who looked like me in the aspirational pages of books and magazines, or even on TV. It was a long journey for me to arrive at self-love,” said Nyong’o.

“Sulwe is a mirror for dark-skinned children to see themselves, a window for those who may not be familiar with colorism, to have understanding and empathy, and an invitation for all who feel different and unseen to recognize their innate beauty and value. I am thrilled that the book is being adapted into an animated musical that we hope inspires children all around the world to celebrate their uniqueness.”

Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect to see the animated musical feature film adaptation debut via Netflix.
