Netflix is beefing up its streaming catalogue, potentially landing an exclusive deal with Lucasfilm for the Star Wars movies.

Update: The Wall Street Journal reports Star Wars may be coming… but only to Netflix in Latin America. Let’s hope any eventual deal will bring it to Netflix territories all around the globe!

Recently, Netflix has been making some changes, ending its partnership with Epix (which holds the rights to movies from MGM, Paramount and Lionsgate), and announcing an increased focus on developing original content.

But at least for the time being, big Hollywood titles will continue to be made available for streaming, and Netflix is constantly working to expand its library.

Will this include the Star Wars saga? Exstreamist has discovered Netflix pages for each of the six existing Star Wars movies, including Episode V, The Empire Strikes Back (pictured below).

Netflix later responded to their enquiry, claiming, “There are no current official plans to bring Star Wars to Netflix.” Keywords: current and official.

The streaming giant has an ongoing partnership with Disney, which extends to its child companies Marvel and Pixar. Notably, Netflix is working with Marvel to develop exclusive series based on a number of their properties, including Daredevil and the upcoming Jessica Jones.

The six existing Star Wars movies are still available on a number of platforms — there are multiple DVD and Blu-ray editions, of course, and earlier this year the entire saga was finally made available as HD digital downloads.

This would be the first time Lucasfilm has made Star Wars available for online streaming, and Netflix acquiring the exclusive rights would certainly be a scoop.

With Episode VII, The Force Awakens, hitting cinemas in December, the timing would also be favorable, as both old and new Star Wars fans will want to (re-)experience Episodes I-VI ahead of J.J. Abrams’ new installment.

If the deal is legit, this could also indicate that The Force Awakens will be made available on Netflix after its initial theatrical release.
