Netflix snagged the deal to reboot Lost In Space all the way back in 2016, so science fiction fans have been waiting a long time to get a first look at the newly adapted series. Now, the first trailer has arrived!

Without further ado, take a look at the teaser below.

The Lost In Space teaser additionally acts as a date announcement for when the 10-episode series will be released online. Mark your calendars for April 13, 2018.

What we know so far

For those unaware — we’re looking out for you millennials — Lost In Space was essentially a retelling of the older Swiss Family Robinson story. Although this zany adventure story originally aired in 1965, it takes place in the year 1997.

YES. The great and advanced future that would be 1997, when a family of space explorers takes off on the Jupiter 2 spaceship ready to colonize a planet orbiting the nearest star Alpha Centauri.

Of course they never make it to their intended location. Instead, they crash on an unidentified planet and the show follows them as they avoid wacky mishaps and partake in absurd interactions with alien travelers.

Although we’re living in another unique point in which space and technology are colliding — (convertibles in space anyone?) — we have a much different appetite when it comes to narrative and story these days. Executive producer Zack Estrin seems to understand that.

When speaking with TV Insider, he said that this rebooted version of Lost in Space would be focusing primarily on the dynamics of the Robinson family. “If you are going to make a new version of Lost In Space, you focus on the core of that original Irwin Allen story: the family.”

However, that doesn’t mean we’re in for a traditional 1960s display of domestic bliss. Actor Toby Stephens has said that the relationship between John and Maureen Robinson is “broken,” and that “these people are lost in extreme situations, but they also don’t know if they’re working as a couple.”

Another extremely fun and interesting change that will be occurring in this Netflix reboot is that they’ve chosen to do a bit of a genderswap! “We realized it would be impossible for any actor to step into the iconic shoes of the late Jonathan Harris,” Estrin goes on to say. “In the pilot we actually pass the torch from Jonathan to Parker Posey with a nod to fans of the original series.”

The 10-episode series of Lost In Space will be released on April 13, 2018.
