Doc McStuffins creator and the Obama’s Higher Grounds production banner are teaming up to bring Ada Twist, Scientist to life on Netflix.

According to Variety, Netflix has ordered 40 12-minute episodes of a brand new animated preschool series called Ada Twist, Scientist, which is based on the popular book series by author Andrea Beaty and illustrator David Roberts.

The series focuses on the titular Ada Twist— an 8-year-old Black scientist who sets out to help others through scientific discovery, collaboration, and friendship. Her two best friends Rosie Revere and Iggy Peck also lend a hand when it comes to helping Ada Twist solve mysteries.

The forthcoming animated children’s series hails from President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, who signed a multi-year deal with Netflix back in 2019.

Higher Ground isn’t the only notable name involved in bringing Ada Twist, Scientist to Netflix. In addition, the project also hails from Chris Nee. Nee, who is best known these days for creating the Disney Channel’s incredibly popular children’s series, Doc McStuffins and Vampirina, also has an overall deal with Netflix.

Also involved behind the scenes is Kerri Grant who will act as showrunner, co-executive producer, and story editor on the series.

In a statement announcing the news, Nee said he was thrilled to be teaming with Higher Ground and Netflix to bring Ada Twist, Scientist to the streaming service.

“As a fan of the books I was taken with the diverse characters, striking designs, and vital message that science matters,” said Nee in a statement. “Plus, Ada fulfills my personal need to populate children’s television with strong girls who aren’t afraid to be the smartest kids int he room. Once Kerri Grant came on board to showrun, I knew we had the dream team to bring this special series to life.
