Netflix’s description of the Disney animated classic Pocahontas has been changed after a user raised concerns about sexism on Twitter.

Late last month Pacific Standards’ Adrienne Keene brought attention to the streaming site’s surprisingly sexist synopsis of Pocahontas. The description turns the 1995 animated classic into a story about a woman needing a better man, and would likely be very misleading to someone who hasn’t seen the movie:

After writing more about it on her website and gaining the support of her readers, Adrienne received this response from Netflix:

“Thanks for bringing attention to this synopsis,” Netflix wrote. “We do our best to accurately portray the plot and tone of the content we’re presenting, and in this case you were right to point out that we could do better. The synopsis has been updated to better reflect Pocahontas’ active role and to remove the suggestion that John Smith was her ultimate goal.”

The new Pocahontas synopsis reads, “A young American Indian girl tries to follow her heart and protect her tribe when settlers arrive and threaten the land she loves.” A screenshot of how it looks in Netflix is below:

That’s a much better description of the Pocahontas we know and love!

“My point was not to criticize the film, which I can save for another time, but to draw attention to the importance of the words we use,” said Keene in response to Netflix’s adjustment, “and the ways that insidious stereotypes and harmful representations sneak in to our everyday lives.”

“Sometimes I’m still amazed by the power of the Internet,” she added. We agree.

It’s surprising to us that places like Netflix don’t simply use Disney’s official synopses when putting together their catalogues. Whoever wrote the original Pocahontas synopsis for Netflix clearly didn’t have a good grasp on the story. Or is sexist themselves.
