Netflix will become the streaming home for 21 Studio Ghibli films for fans not located in the U.S., Canada or Japan.

The battle for the U.S. streaming rights to famed animation house Studio Ghibli films ended with HBO Max landing the North American rights to Studio Ghibli’s iconic library.

However, Netflix has now become the international home for fans of Studio Ghibli films, as the streamer announced earlier today that it would become the home for 21 Studio Ghibli films for fans located outside North America and Japan.

HBO Max made headlines earlier this year when it announced that it had landed the North American streaming rights to Studio Ghibli’s extensive filmography, which represented the first time the content had been licensed to a streamer. However, the international rights were still up for grabs, which Netflix snatched up successfully.

International Netflix streamers will release a total of 21 Studio Ghibli films in three waves. The first wave will drop seven films — Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Only Yesterday, Porco Rosso, Ocean Waves, Tales from Earthsea — on February 1st.

The next wave will likewise release seven films on March 1st — Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbors the Yamadas, Spirited Away, The Cat Returns, Arrietty, and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya .

The final seven films will be released on April 1st and will include Pom Poko, Whisper of the Heart, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, From Up on Poppy Hill, The Wind Rises and When Marnie Was There.

As the movies will be streaming across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South America, the entire catalogue of Studio Ghibli films will be subtitled in 28 languages, and dubbed in up to 20 languages.

The films will begin streaming on Netflix outside of North America and Japan starting February 1st, 2020. The films will begin streaming in the U.S. and Canada when HBO Max launches in May.
