News from the TCAs suggests that new installments of Marvel’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones may not arrive until 2018.

According to Netflix boss Ted Sarandos, the current lineup for the network’s Marvel series includes Luke Cage on Sept. 30, and then Iron Fist and the highly-anticipated Defenders series in 2017. EW’s Natalie Abrams reports that subsequent installments of Daredevil and Jessica Jones are on hold until after The Defenders.

The holding pattern also impacts the recently announced Punisher series starring Jon Bernthal. While fans’ appetites for Jessica and the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen will be sated somewhat in The Defenders, IGN reports that the Punisher may also appear in the Avengers-esque series.

“Stay tuned,” is what Sarandos has to say on the matter.

Presumably, Jessica Jones season 2 will take the first Netflix slot in 2018, as that season is already in production. Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg has hinted that Jessica will find herself conflicted by taking the life of Kilgrave, and that this action represents a sea-change for the reluctant hero.

Jessica “feels that taking a life is a… life-changing experience,” Rosenberg tells Nerdist. Given the impact of this decision on her character, it will be fascinating to see how Jessica is portrayed in The Defenders — how much of a change will she have experienced before her second season even arrives?

That change will largely be in the hands of Daredevil showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez, who will be helming The Defenders. That assignment probably also contributes to the delay on Daredevil season 3, as it may take some time to get Matt Murdock back in solo gear.

Unfortunately, Netflix’s plans for Marvel don’t include a revival of ABC’s canceled Agent Carter. But Sarandos does hope to expand the slate of Marvel collaborations, and speed up the process for fans.

“We’re gonna try to make them quicker so we can get less downtime between them,” he says.

Marvel’s Luke Cage arrives on Netflix on Sept. 30.
