After Netflix received a fair amount of criticism for the smoking shown in Stranger Things 3, the streamer vowed to cut back in future shows.

These days, it’s a pretty widespread notion that smoking is incredibly bad for you, so we don’t often see it depicted new shows. However, Netflix has featured several programs — often shows set in the past, like Stranger Things — that show quite a bit of onscreen smoking, and the streamer has come under criticism for it.

Netflix is responding to those speaking out against the streamer’s smoking, especially in shows rated TV-14 or PG-13 and below, vowing to seriously cut down the images of characters lighting up onscreen. As The Hollywood Reporter explains, Netflix’s official statement said, “Going forward, all new projects that we commission with ratings of TV-14 or below for series or PG-13 or below for films, will be smoking and e-cigarette free — except for reasons of historical or factual accuracy.”

Beyond that, Netflix promised that all future programming wouldn’t feature the use of cigarettes or e-cigarettes “unless it’s essential to the creative vision of the artist or because it’s character-defining (historically or culturally important).”

This response comes after a group called The Truth Initiative, a group that is working to eliminate tobacco use, issued a report that said Netflix nearly tripled the moments of onscreen tobacco use from previous years, going from 866 instances to last year’s 299. In Stranger Things alone, Truth Initiative found that 100% of every episode featured some sort of tobacco use.

In Netflix’s official statement, they explained that while they support artistic expression, they realized that it can be harmful to show onscreen tobacco use in shows meant for younger audiences. Moving forward, the streamer will highlight information that explains the tobacco use featured in a show in a program’s ratings boxes.

Of course, the tobacco featured in Stranger Things can easily be explained as a point of historical accuracy. While it began to circulate that smoking was bad for you in the mid-sixties, people still smoked quite a bit in the ’80s, the decade in which Stranger Things is set.

However, the show is rated TV-14, so it will certainly be interesting to see how Netflix changes the show and others moving forward. It is always a delicate balance between historical accuracy and depicting something harmful to younger audiences, and we’re glad to see Netflix is paying attention to the images they produce.
