Netflix is trying its hand at bringing another beloved anime to life, this time with a live-action Cowboy Bebop series.

Netflix has officially announced a 10-episode, straight-to-series order for a new, live-action Cowboy Bebop series. The series was initially meant for Amazon Studios, but with Amazon passed Netflix was able to scoop up the series.

For those unfamiliar with Cowboy Bebop, one of the most well-loved, biggest anime series. The 1998 series was written by Cain Kuga and follows a group of bounty hunters named Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Fay Valentine, and Radical Ed as they travel the galaxy on their spaceship, the Bebop. It’s set in the future in a dystopian society where people have left earth to live on Mars and Mercury.

As The Hollywood Reporter states, the live-action series will tell the story of these bounty hunters as they travel the skies on the run from their past, hunting down some of the worst criminals in the galaxy. While we don’t know too much about the cast, Keanu Reeves is said to star in the series, but it hasn’t been announced if he’ll be playing Spike or a different character in the series.

This isn’t Netflix’s first foray into adapting a beloved anime into the live-action space. In 2017 the streamer released a live-action Death Note movie and will be releasing a sequel to the film as well. However, the film had fans extremely divided due to complaints that the movie whitewashed characters meant to be of Japanese heritage.

So while we’re extremely excited to see Cowboy Bebop go live-action, we will have to see what other casting choices are made for this adaptation. But with the incredibly high stakes of adapting one of the most iconic and well-loved animes for the big screen, we really hope to see casting choices that aren’t just a bunch of white actors.

The good news is, Shinichiro Watanabe, who directed the original series, is set to be a consultant on the series, and will hopefully be able to speak into big decisions like casting. We’ll be following this exciting new series as more news develops.
