Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez is teaming up with Netflix to bring Carmen Sandiego back to television!

Update (January 4, 2019): With just a couple weeks to go until Carmen Sandiego premieres, Netflix has released the first trailer! In it, we see her heading “through new international capers and past escapades with her loyal sidekick, Player” (voiced by Finn Wolfhard). The streamer notes that they will not only answer WHERE is Carmen Sandiego, but WHO is Carmen Sandiego:

Update (December 10): WHEN in the world will Carmen Sandiego premiere? January 18, 2019, Netflix says. A new poster was also released today:

Given how soon this release date is, it shouldn’t be long until we receive a trailer!

Update (April 18): Netflix has officially announced the new series! 20 episodes will premiere in 2019. The show is simply titled Carmen Sandiego. According to a synopsis, “Carmen Sandiego is back and ready for a new crop of international capers packed with thrilling adventure and intrigue. This fresh take will present an intimate look into Carmen’s past where viewers will not only follow her escapades but also learn who in the world is Carmen Sandiego and why she became a super thief.” Here’s a first look:

Original story (April 14): According to the Tracking Board, Netflix’s new Carmen Sandiego series “is based on the iconic video game series Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? and the subsequent TV show of the same name, which starred Lynne Thigpen as ‘The Chief.'”

No surprise there, but good to know it’ll be inspired by the Carmen Sandiego of our past.

For their part, Netflix has yet to announce this news themselves, so we’ll keep you posted on that front. The source of the news is reliable, and we know Netflix loves bringing back classics. (They’re working on a revival of The Magic School Bus with Kate McKinnon!)

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, the game show, ran for 295 episodes across five seasons on PBS.
