Very bad news, Netflix subscribers: as Netflix and the BBC’s contract expires, the streaming service will drop most of its popular British films and series.

No more Doctor Who, Luther, Top Gear, Torchwood, Red Dwarf and the original House of Cards on Netflix: that’s the sad reality we’re facing as the Netflix/BBC partnership expires at the end of the month.

While we are still hoping for a renewal of their contract, right now major news outlets are reporting that most BBC content will be removed from Netflix on Jan. 31, 2015.

We are assuming this goes for all countries’ versions of Netflix, not just the American. We’re still waiting on more precise info, however.

This impending Flixaster reminds us just how much fantastic material the BBC has to offer, and we wouldn’t blame you if you were considering switching to Amazon Prime – which still has most of the BBC films and TV series up on their site.

BBC has long been struggling to compete with online distributors like Netflix and Amazon. In December 2014, BBC’s director of TV Danny Cohen was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying that Netflix had recently “blown us out of the water in terms of a deal,” and the fact that their partnership contract has not yet been renewed is possibly a fallout of this.

This pretty much sums up our feelings on the issue:

To find out more about the content we’ll be losing (and gaining) at the end of the month, head on over to What’s on Netflix Now.

There’s also a petition you can sign, which asks Netflix and BBC to keep Doctor Who on the site. If nothing else, it’ll give them an incentive to reconsider their contract negotiations.
