Continuing the reboot craze, MGM is working to reboot the Robocop franchise, with a movie that is set to be directed by Neill Blomkamp.

Yet another rebooted franchise is headed our way. MGM is working to revive the classic RoboCop franchise. Though a new RoboCop film made its way to theaters in 2014, it didn’t do great at the domestic box office, nor did it blow fans away. Still, that isn’t stopping MGM for taking another run at reviving the franchise that first made its debut in 1987.

The new movie, called RoboCop Returns, is set in a futuristic Detroit that is overrun with crime. When a cop is badly wounded in the line of duty, he is saved from death’s door by being turned into a cyborg to help really make a dent in crime.

As Deadline reports, not only will Neill Blomkamp (District 9) be directing this film, but Returns will also be a revamped version of the script originally written by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, the screenwriters of the original RoboCop. Justin Rhodes is working on the rewrite (Rhodes is also working on Tim Miller’s Terminator reboot), and Neumeier and Miner will be creatively involved in RoboCop Returns. This is the first time the duo has worked on the franchise since the 1987 film.

Neumeier and Miner’s original script for the sequel was ultimately scrapped in the original franchise due to the writer’s lack of interest in dealing with “sequel politics” as well as ultimately being pushed out in the wake of the 1988 writer’s strike. However, when the MGM president John Glickman realized how eerily timely the original sequel script was (even down to predicting that a reality TV star would become president), MGM opted to revive the long-lost script.

RoboCop is definitely a fun piece of modern science fiction, and it seems that bringing back the original scriptwriters might help this new sequel tap into that bizarre, satirical fun and adventure that made us all love the original 1987 film. We’ll keep you posted as more news breaks about this sequel.
