Earlier today it was reported that Neil Marshall, director of Doomsday and The Descent, will be trying his hand at TV directing with an episode of the second season of Game of Thrones!

The Hollywood Reporter broke this news, and author George R.R. Martin later raved about the match, naming Marshall’s movie The Descent as “the best horror film of the past twenty years.” He gushes:

That sound you hear is a high-pitched squeal of delight.  I love Marshall’s work, in case you couldn’t tell.

Martin also reveals which episode Marshall has signed on to direct:

What makes this especially exciting is that the episode he’ll be directing is… mine. Yes. He’s going to directing episode nine, “Blackwater.” The Battle of the Blackwater. I still don’t how the hell we can possibly afford to do half of what I put into that script, but if anyone can pull off my budget-busting battle, it’s Marshall.

It’s great that Martin has so much confidence in this director choice! Anyone who’s read A Clash of Kings will know how truly massive in scale (and character moments) the Battle of the Blackwater sequence is, and it’s great that the author himself feels like they’ve found a good director for the task!
