Check out a clip of Neil Gaiman reading from The Ocean at the End of the Lane, his forthcoming fantasy novel for adults.

Harper Voyager has released a video of author Neil Gaiman reading an excerpt from his new novel, The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Check out the reading – and Gaiman’s new, be-whiskered look – right here:

The Ocean at the End of the Lane will be released on June 18. The novel, Gaiman’s first “for adults” since Anasi Boys was published in 2008, has already received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews and Booklist. The story is narrated by a middle-aged man who, upon returning to his childhood home in Sussex, is drawn back into the magical mystery of his un-aged neighbor Lettie Hempstock, her curious family – and the ominous pond at the end of their lane.

Rife with death, curses, and money, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is Neil Gaiman’s only full-length novel written in the first-person. The official blurb calls the book “groundbreaking… as delicate as a butterfly’s wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark.” Joe Wright – most recently of Anna Karenina – evidently agrees with that sentiment, as he has signed on to direct the movie adaptation of the forthcoming novel. Tom Hanks will reportedly act as one of the film’s producers, along with Gary Goetzman and Paul Webster.

In other Neil Gaiman-related news, the author has recently shed a little bit of light on his Doctor Who episode, “Nightmare in Silver,” as well as his writing process for television.
