A new Walking Dead comic is slowly but surely unveiling Negan’s life prior to becoming a villain, and the first pages have already unveiled what his line of work was before the apocalypse.

Four pages of Here’s Negan are being unveiled each month in IMAGE+ magazine. ComicBook.com checked out the first few pages, and learned that Negan’s career before the outbreak was one you probably wouldn’t have expected: He was a school teacher. Yes, he educated children!

“Negan was a school teacher and ping pong coach,” reports ComicBook.com. “The story starts out with a younger, still sarcastic Negan coaching a few young men on their ping pong skills. When he is able to ruthlessly dominate one young opponent, he uses his colorful language and sexual references to further belittle the pupil.

“After the pupil scampers off, the other two young men apologize, trying to stay cool in Negan’s eyes. Negan, of course, wants to be the cool teacher in school. This is revealed when his girlfriend or wife approaches following the kids running out.

“Things turn bad when she appears to have a seizure right in front of Negan and lose her footing.”

It looks like Negan’s “sarcasm” carried over between his two very different lives, but the reason for his general evilness has yet to be unveiled. While we don’t know the full story within Here’s Negan yet (again, only four pages are being published each month), one could guess that his wife’s seizure could lead to some long-term trouble for the character.

Interestingly, Negan has a history not unlike Fear the Walking Dead’s Travis, who was a teacher himself in Los Angeles prior to the outbreak. Perhaps they bumped into each other during a teacher convention somewhere in America? …I’m joking. Kinda.

There’s been a lot of interest in Negan since he made his debut in The Walking Dead television series (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan) during April’s season 6 finale. We know that he killed one of Rick’s people as payback for the trouble Team Grimes has caused him, but we still don’t know who his victim was. We’ll have to wait until season 6 premieres this October to find out! If you can’t wait until then, check out our guesses at who fell victim to Lucille.

Time will tell if The Walking Dead will bring Negan’s backstory into the show. It would certainly be a surprise for TV viewers to find out that this guy was teaching children before becoming one of the worst people Rick Grimes has ever encountered.
