NBC’s new comedy series, Undateable returns for its sophomore season tonight after The Voice and Hypable’s got the scoop on a few of the things you can expect in season two. Check out what cast members Chris D’Elia, Bridgit Mendler and more had to say about where this season will find Danny, Justin and the rest of the gang below.

Created by Adam Sztykiel (Due Date, Made of Honor), Undateable follows Danny Burton (Whitney‘s Chris D’Elia) a perpetual bachelor who befriends quirky bar owner, Justin (Brent Morin) and his rag tag group of friends — the nerdy and socially awkward Burski (Rick Glassman), the pleasantly odd Shelly (Ron Funches), and last but not least, the recently out-of-the-closet Brett (David Fynn) — all of whom have certain qualities that make them unlucky in love, or ‘undateable.’

With season two well into filming, actor Brent Morin, who plays the optimistic Justin, says the entire cast has really found their footing, something he credits largely to producer Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Cougar Town) who Morin says has been very supportive about letting the actors improv during filming. According to Morin, the fact that they are given the leeway to take a scene and run with it — especially considering the majority of the show’s stars come from stand-up comedy roots — is a big reason as to why the show is as funny as it is.

“It’s a little different in here than other shows — Bill [Lawrence] kind of had an idea of putting funny people in a show and then letting them go a bit,” explains Morin. “A lot of times, we’ll cut a scene and then Bill will come up to us and say, alright, we got it so if you guys wanna run with it or go with it, go for it. The first cut of our first episode this year, I heard, was 60 minutes and it’s supposed to be 21 — that’s why our tape nights are so fun.”

While fans can expect the same brand of organic comedy they fell in love with during the show’s first season, one brand new addition to the show sure to shake things up when Undateable returns for season two on NBC is the addition of actress Bridgit Mendler who is set to take on the role of the quirky female bartender at Black Eyes Bar.

Morin, like the rest of his co-stars couldn’t be happier with having Mendler join the cast and likens her character Candace as the “Woody [Harrelson] in Cheers” to the Black Eyes Bar crew. “She really fits the mold and I think it’s really helped us because she’s a great character.” says Morin.

So what can fans can expect when Mendler makes her debut in the first episode of season two? Morin says she’s just a character that “you gotta love.”

“She’s so naive [but] you slowly realize that she’s got a terrible past but she’s so positive about it and you have a lot of comedy in that,” says Morin of the character Candace. “She kind of slowly becomes part of the group and you start to care about her and you don’t know if anything is going to happen between [Justin] and her because we’re kind of similar in a lot of ways, character-wise. You’ll notice that in the first half of the season– we’re both naive, we like to sing, we both put our foot in our mouth.”

As for Bridgit Mendler herself, the former Disney Channel starlet may be the new kid on the block this season, but the rising actress says despite being the newest cast member, she’s feeling right at home on the set of Undateable.

While Mendler says doing a ‘grown-up’ show is “a whole new ballgame” for her in a way, one thing that really helped her transition seamlessly into prime-time comedy was the familiar aspect of a sit-com, which for her, was very similar to Disney Channel’s Good Luck Charlie.

“I feel so fortunate to have landed in this world,” gushes Mendler. “I think the show is genuinely funny, I think the actors are really good — the stand-up scene is really interesting to me cuz I had no idea what that was before so in that sense it just feels really great to have met a new family of people.”

As for her character Candace, Mendler says that while she may come off as bubbly and a bit clumsy in the first episode, fans should know there’s a lot more to her to be discovered as the season progresses.

“She has a dark past but she wears it lightly and with acceptance so sometimes she’ll say these things about her past that to any other person would sound really depressing and terrible but because that was her life and she came to terms with it and she delivers it like, whatever.” says Mendler. “As far as the undateable aspect, she doesn’t really have a high sense of self worth — I think she enjoys her life and likes being able to help people but I don’t really think she knows how she’s supposed to be treated — she doesn’t know how a relationship should look like and I think that’s why she gets mistreated.

As for how she fits in with Danny, Justin and the rest of the gang, Mendler says that Candace’s ability to assume the best in everyone is something that will help shed a new light on each of the character’s personalities going forward.

One character Candace definitely brings out a new side of is perpetual bachelor, Danny, played by comedian Chris D’Elia (Whitney). Don’t expect sparks to fly between the two on the show however. In a twist for his character, D’Elia says fans can expect Candace to bring out a fatherly protectiveness from Danny that fans haven’t seen before.

“In the beginning, I feel like he just thinks of her as kind of another Justin because she’s very optimistic and likes to sing and all that but he grows to have feelings for her just as a person and he sees that she’s a very sweet, young, girl and also feels like maybe she needs someone in her life to fill that fatherly role.” says D’Elia of Danny’s perception of Candace. “He kind of puts his arm around her and takes her in a little bit.”

“Every episode, he gets maybe a milli-step closer to actually being a human being so there’s always something he kind of learns about himself that helps him become more of a full person.” says D’Elia of Danny in season 2.

But while Danny may be slowly be changing his ways, D’Elia says fans shouldn’t expect him to settle down any time soon.

“I’d like for Danny one day to maybe find a girl he liked and maybe not settle down, but have like a cool chick that he kind of hangs with but we definitely won’t see that happening this season– he’s still got some growing to do,” says D’Elia.

Undateable returns for season 2 tonight at 9 p.m., on NBC.
