The Golden Globes will have to find a new home for 2022. NBC has just announced that it will not air next year’s ceremony.

On Monday (May 10), NBC announced that it will not air the 2022 Golden Globes ceremony on its network.

The news comes as The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) continues to come under fire from celebrities, Hollywood studios, and stakeholders for its diversity issues.

Outcry heated up just before the 2021 ceremony in February when the Los Angeles Times published an expose in which it detailed the Golden Globes’ history of diversity and representation issues. In addition to revealing that currently, the HFPA does not have a single Black member, the report also outlined some problematic financial choices.

In the time since, the HFPA’s 86 total members have voted for an infusion and overhaul proposal. On May 6, they publicly released reform plans that includes increasing the number of people of color on its board, in addition to putting some new restrictions on gifts and payments members can receive.

Plans alone aren’t enough for NBC, however, and in a statement announcing the decision to opt out of airing the 2022 Golden Globes, the network explained why.

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” reads the statement according to Variety. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

NBC isn’t the only one pushing back and holding the HFPA accountable.

In addition, a handful of major studios including Netflix, Amazon and WarnerMedia have all announced plans to boycott the Golden Globes until the HPFA can offer a better timeline as to when we’ll see some visible changes as a result of their proposed reform.
