How would you tell the tale of a modern-day Noah’s Ark? Build a spaceship and send humanity out into the unknown, of course!

The tale of Noah’s Ark has been told and retold countless times, but now NBC is putting a different spin on it and updating it for modern audiences.

Deadline reports that the network has bought the rights to The Ark, the aforementioned Noah’s Ark series set in space.

The project began with Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Cast Away), who will be executive producing the series. It’s being written by Daniel Kunka (12 Rounds).

Deadline describes the project thus: “It centers on an engineer who, after the death of his wife, has a vision to construct a ship capable of sustaining life in space. When the build happens to coincide with the coming end of the world, the engineer realizes there may be a larger story at play.”

It was originally slated for a cable network, Fox 21 TV Studios, but the studio thought it’d do better on network television.

The idea is reminiscent of what we’ve seen on The 100, where the remaining vestiges of humanity were sent to live on a space station (actually named The Ark) until Earth was safe to inhabit once again, following a nuclear apocalypse.

But where The 100 shows us what happens after humanity returns to Earth, it sounds like NBC’s The Ark will be showing us what happens leading up to such an event.

The most recent big-budget adaptation of the story of Noah’s Ark comes in the form of Noah, led by Russell Crowe. It also starred Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson, and Logan Lerman.
