Bad news for Xena: Warrior Princess fans who were looking forward to the proposed reboot. It looks like it won’t be happening after all.

Back in July of 2015, we reported that NBC was currently working on a reboot of the cult-female led classic series Xena: Warrior Princess. Now it’s looking like the network has pulled the plug on the prospective revival.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has officially pulled the plug on the reboot. That being said, fans shouldn’t bust out the tissues just yet. Though the network has no plans to revive the series in the imminent future, they’re not ruling it out as a possibility somewhere down the line.

“Nothing is happening on that right now. We looked at some material; we decided at that point that it didn’t warrant the reboot,” said network entertainment president Jennifer Salke. “I’d never say never on that one because it’s such a beloved title but the current incarnation of it is dead.”

Originally, NBC had tapped Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Charmed, The Chronicle, The Middle Man, and Lost) to write the pilot script for the reboot.

Though Grillo-Marxuach’s involvement was cause for excitement, according to Entertainment Weekly, Grillo-Marxuach exited the revival due to creative differences.

So what exactly is NBC looking for when it comes to a Xena pitch they’d be interested in pursuing?

Though Salke didn’t go into details during her interview with THR, she did reveal that they’re looking for “someone to come in with a point of view about what they want to do.”

We’ll be interested to see if NBC ends up picking the project up again with a new team somewhere down the line.
