National Lampoon’s Vacation is being developed into a series for HBO Max called The Griswolds that will focus on the family’s adventures.

HBO Max has announced another exciting new series for its upcoming streaming service. The streamer is making a series adaptation called The Griswolds that is based on the family from the hilarious film National Lampoon’s Vacation.

As Variety reports, the show will center around the Griswold gang at home from vacation and will center around their everyday lives in Chicago. The show will be a half-hour, single-camera series.

Of course, it can be a bit tricky turning beloved movies from the 80s into a modern series, but there is an original member of the cast of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation onboard The Griswolds to help the series appeal to fans new and old. Johnny Galecki, who played Rusty “Russ” Griswold when he was just 14 years old, is set to executive produce the series alongside Holly Brown.

At this point, it is unclear who is set to star in the series. Additionally, apart from Galecki’s work behind the camera, it’s also unknown if any other original cast members from other National Lampoon movies will make an appearance.

There are several movies in the franchise like National Lampoon’s Vacation, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, National Lampoon’s European Vacation, Vegas Vacation, and Vacation. Vacation came out in 2015 and starred Ed Helms as an adult Russ taking his family on a trip that, like any Griswold outing, doesn’t go quite as planned.

While it’s pretty unlikely that Ed Helms will appear in this show, ostensibly, some of the actors from the 80s films could appear. The original films starred Chevy Chase as the original Griswold patriarch, Beverly D’Angelo as his wife, Ellen, Randy Quaid played the infamous “Uncle Eddie,” and the children were played by a range of actors from Galecki, Ethan Embry to Anthony Michael Hall, as well as Juliette Lewis, Dana Barron, and Marisol Nichols.

We’ll keep you posted as more news breaks on this series, and we’ll be watching the original National Lampoon films to get ready for The Griswolds.
