According to Deadline, Nathan Fillion is joining the cast of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel.

Though the role itself is being kept under wraps, sources have told Deadline that Fillion has boarded the project. Fillion will be joining returning cast members Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Joel Kinnaman, as well as the newer additions of Idris Elba, David Dastmalchian (Polka-Dot Man), Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher), Flula Borg and Steve Agee (King Shark).

Fillion is no stranger to working and collaborating with Gunn. He provided a voice for an inmate on Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 1, played the role of Bill Pardy in Slither, and the Holy Avenger in Super, so the two teaming back up on Gunn’s latest project is not a huge surprise. It is uncertain whether Fillion will be playing a small cameo — as in Guardians, or have a more substantial part.

In addition to being a semi-frequent collaborator of Gunn’s, Fillion has also starred in some of DC’s animated properties, lending his voice to the Green Lantern in movies such as Reign of the Superman and Justice League: Doom — though it is unlikely that Fillion’s role will be a live-action version of his animated counterpart.

The follow-up to Suicide Squad is slated for release on August 6, 2021, with production set to begin in September. Fillion is currently starring on ABC drama The Rookie. Its second season is due to premiere on September 29.
