Sorry, Jane and Thor shippers. Natalie Portman has confirmed that she won’t return for future Marvel movies.

Alarm bells should already have begun ringing when it became clear that Natalie Portman wouldn’t be returning for the third Thor movie Ragnarok, but now it’s official: Via the Wall Street Journal, Portman has confirmed that she’s done with the MCU.

“As far as I know, I’m done. I don’t know if maybe one day they’ll ask for Avengers 7 or whatever. I have no idea,” says Portman, whose last project was January’s female-centric Western Jane Got A Gun.

Not only is Jane Foster not slated to appear in Thor: Ragnarok, but Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is also rumored to find a new love interest in Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie.

It’s unfortunate that the character of Jane — much like Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts — is so easily disposable that she can drop from the franchise from one film to another, without any kind of send-off.

This disposability is a lingering problem with Marvel ‘love interests’ (read: The majority of its female characters), that we hope will be rectified in future instalments of the many-armed film series.

And there are signs of improvement: Not only does there now exist more than one female Avenger (albeit neither has a solo film to shine in yet), but a new crop of love interest characters — including Thompson’s Valkyrie, and Zendaya as Mary Jane in Spider-Man — promise to be a lot more integral to the overall story of the MCU.

Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi, and also stars Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. The movie is currently filming in Australia, and is set to premiere on November 3, 2017.
