You read that right, Whovians! After years of speculation and rumors we finally know who is going to be the first female Doctor on Doctor Who.

When it was announced that Peter Capaldi would be leaving Doctor Who after the upcoming 10th season, the speculation began immediately to see if the show. Would they finally change course and cast a woman as the Doctor? We now have our answer: Yes!

Natalie Dormer has officially been cast in the role, announced today in a press release by BBC America. If you’re unfamiliar with the star actress, Dormer made a name for herself on Game of Thrones as Princess Margaery Tyrell for the past several seasons and had a large role in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, parts 1 and 2.

“I am absolutely thrilled,” exclaims executive producer Chris Chibnall, who is taking the reins from Steven Moffat starting next season. “Natalie has everything we were looking for in our next Doctor: Wit, class, hips and coloured lips. We’ve been searching for a woman on this show for ages. Honestly, we almost had to have Capaldi in drag but I’m glad we waited for the real thing.”

Apparently Dormer has been in the running for several years, but her schedule simply wouldn’t let it happen. “I’m so honoured to be the first woman Doctor,” Dormer told us on the phone this morning. “Chris had told me a while back about the possibility but my work for Game of Thrones kept me busy. You know what happened there, so now I’m finally available!”

Although, according to another (albeit bitter) source, it may not be Game of Thrones that kept Dormer away from the T.A.R.D.I.S. this long.

“That’s a lie,” Moffat explains. We called him up after speaking with Dormer and he explained the reality of the situation. “Chibnall lost to me at rock, paper scissors. That’s why Peter got the role of Twelve instead of Natalie, and why I got to get another shot. That man always picks rock, I don’t know why.”

Regardless of how Dormer got the role we’re very excited to see her don a Timelord look and get in the T.A.R.D.I.S., and so is Chibnall. “I already have a ton of great ideas,” he explains. “I’m thinking the T.A.R.D.I.S. will get a whole new look too, castle style. I liked seeing Natalie in Game of Thrones so I wanted to keep that aesthetic in her T.A.R.D.I.S. Rocks. Rocks everywhere.”

As for the companion? There’s no official word on who will be Dormer’s first companion in season 11 but if it was up to Moffat he says it would be… Natalie Dormer. “I’ve wanted to do that since I took over. The Doctor with a split personality, the other personality being the Companion. We could use camera angles and editing to convey the Doctor talking to her companion.”

Luckily he’s not in charge anymore and the heads of BBC kept that from happening in years past. “That’s why he’s out,” Chibnall said when we asked him about Moffat’s theory. “He’s batshit.”

Regardless of what happened in the past we’re super excited to see Natalie Dormer cast as the Doctor! It’ll be a while until we see it, but we’re sure it’s going to be amazing.
