Nat Geo is delving further into scripted content, this time developing a series based on the hit film Hidden Figures.

Though most people think of documentaries when they think of Nat Geo, the network has been exploring more scripted content lately. Their latest endeavor is developing a series based on the true story behind the hit 2016 film Hidden Figures.

As Variety reports, the series is still in the very early stages of development. However, like the film, the series would focus on the lives of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson, three Black women whose talents as mathematicians were key to the success of America’s space program.

Nat Geo has been pumping out a surprising amount of compelling television lately. Their first series, Genius, focused on the lives of famous, brilliant individuals from history. The first season focused on the life of Albert Einstein and earned a whopping 10 Emmy nominations.

Of course, the Hidden Figures series would be in good company if Nat Geo picks up the show. Leonardo DiCaprio is also currently developing a series for the network based on the book and 1983 film The Right Stuff, which tells the story of the early days of the American space program.

With the landscape of television changing so rapidly thanks to streaming services, it’s really allowed networks to step up their game to produce excellent shows that have high production value and compelling storylines. Nat Geo is experimenting with some fascinating show ideas, celebrating the real-life stories of individuals who made an impact on the world in a scripted format. We absolutely adored the movie Hidden Figures, but we’re excited to see how Nat Geo plans to tell the story of those amazing women in a serialized format.
