Turns out happy endings aren’t for everybody as shown last night on Nashville season 3, episode 15, “That’s The Way Love Goes.” Read on below for the full recap.

With so much that went on last night we are going to go down the character line and see what happened. Let’s begin!

Rayna and Deacon: Looks like Rayna is getting honored at the Grand Ole Opry, Sadie can’t be there and it turns out that neither can Deacon. Maddie confronts Deacon about why they haven’t gotten together yet and he really doesn’t have a reason. Later that night Rayna tells Maddie and Daphne that she wants the girls to perform with her. Maddie confronts her mom about Deacon and we get another non-answer. She later calls Deacon and asks him to play with her and the girls. He tells her he needs to think about it.

The night of the Opry, everyone is there. Rayna runs into Luke with Colton and the girls and Luke sees Deacon. Rayna takes the girls to their dressing room and Deacon shows up. The girls kill it at their debut, with Deacon playing guitar with them. With Luke watching from the wings, Deacon and Rayna sing “The Rivers Between Us Are Deep.” Colt sees his dad not handling the performance and consoles his dad. The whole performance is beautifully shot and it reminds me of the final scene in Walk the Line. After the too emotional performance, Deacon leaves.

The girls ask where Deacon went to and nobody knows. The next morning Rayna heads out to Deacon’s cabin and she asks him to not leave her anymore. He finally tells her that he has cancer. First she slaps him then they hug. Ugh.

Luke and Will: At his photo shoot for his official signing with Luke’s label, Will finds out Jeff was fired. He also gets assigned a song writer to help him write more personal songs and it turns out that that guy is openly gay. Will is no longer feeling good about his decision to sign with Luke. He goes home and bitches to Gunnar, who sets him straight about how good the writer Kevin is.

Luke agrees to go the Opry with his son so he can see Maddie. He has coffee with Bucky the next day to make sure that is okay. He asks Bucky about pairing Kevin and Will together and Bucky agrees. Will goes to his song writing session and is a complete douche. They end up talking about getting kicked out of his house and write a song together. Luke ends the night with his son who wants to come home permanently to be with his dad and Maddie. Poor Luke, he can’t win.

Avery, Gunnar, and Scarlett: The luckiest trio in the world finds out that the opening band for Rascal Flatts fell out at the last minute and Gunnar got them as the replacements! Now they just need to figure out their new band name. Scarlett excuses herself from that task to go out with Deacon’s doctor on a date. She ends up talking medical jargin the whole time and the doctor ends the date. Scarlett goes home and tells Deke that she can’t be the only one to know his secret anymore.

Scarlett takes a peace offering of coffee to Caleb’s office the next morning and apologizes about the date. The night of the show, Gunnar and Avery are really struggling coming up with a band name. They end up settling on ‘The Triple XXX’s’ and kill their performance too. Who knew this love triangle from season 1 would end up being the best of friends and a band! Nashville, you sure can do character rehab right! Except that Gunnar might be jealous over Scarlett’s new beau. Uh oh. The trio gets booked for six shows with Rascal Flatts though.

Teddy: Our favorite disgraced mayor is avoiding his ex hooker’s calls. This won’t end well and of course it doesn’t as she shows up at the Opry. She ends up telling him that she has noticed her house has been watched. The look on Teddy’s face is priceless. We told you this wouldn’t work out well Mayor!

Jeff and Layla: Meanwhile the strangest relationship in town is still going strong it seems. Jeff is helping get Layla ready for her meeting with Bucky but he says he won’t go with her. When she gets home she tells him that they aren’t going to do much until after Sadie’s record launches and follow the traditional launch style. Jeff says this is not the way to get her promoted and she tells him that he should have been there to help her stick up for herself. She actually throws an ice cube at him and it’s hilarious. They bicker and have hot angry sex. So healthy guys!

Layla is the at Opry talking to reporters about her recently released single and Buck is not happy about it. Bucky tells her that he isn’t happy she went behind his back but that she is right to push for her music. Layla also tells Jeff that he was right about them not being seen together for a while longer.

Sadie: Sadie heads to Good Morning America and they ask her about her relationship with her ex-husband. She ends up opening about her domestic abuse right there on the show. Hopefully this doesn’t end even worse for her.
