Naomi Watts is heading to Amazon to spearhead a remake of Goodnight Mommy.

According to Variety, Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts has officially signed on to star in and executive produce Amazon Studios’ upcoming remake of Goodnight Mommy.

Based on the Austrian psychological thriller of the same name, the film focuses on twin brothers who go to stay with their mother, only to find her wrapped up in bandages when they arrive. It’s not long before the twins start to realize there’s something off about their mother. Convinced she’s an imposter, the twins’ suspicions lead to a whirlwind of events with catastrophic ends.

Watts will take on the role of the mother in the film. Behind the camera, Take Me To The River vet Matt Sobel will serve as director on the English remake. Meanwhile, Kyle Warren will adapt the script.

In a statement announcing his involvement with the project, Sobel hinted at how the English language remake will differ from the original Austrian hit.

“My favorite films are those that invite the audience to step inside their protagonist’s journey. In our re-imagining of Goodnight Mommy, fear of abandonment — and the dreadful realization that those close to us may not be who they seem — create an immersive nightmare, with visceral sensations front and center,” said the director. “I can’t wait to create this heart-stopping story with Amazon and the peerless Naomi Watts.”

Behind the camera, Severin Fail and Veronica Franz, who directed the original 2014 Austrian film, are on board to executive produce along Watts.

Currently, there’s no word on when we might expect to see Goodnight Mommy starring Naomi Watts debut via Amazon.
