My Big Fat Greek Wedding actress Nia Vardalos has revealed that she’s currently writing the sequel for her massively popular film.

Nia Vardalos created a blockbuster back in 2002 when she released her romantic comedy titled My Big Fat Greek Wedding alongside Sex in the City star John Corbett. Vardalos wrote the script and starred in the wildly popular film, with Joel Zwick in the director’s seat.

The original film would go on to pull in $368 million worldwide on a micro-budget of just $5 million. It launched Vardalos into superstardom for a short time, but her next few films weren’t as well received.

Now the actress is writing the sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding and she has revealed that her co-star John Corbett will be returning.

Vardalos had actually quit acting for a spell when she and her husband Ian were attempting to adopt a foster child. But now she’s back in the writer’s chair, making the sequel that MBFGW fans have been dying to see over the last 12 years.

Vardalos says, “Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story. Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”

Tom Hanks, his wife Rita and Gary Goetzman will produce the sequel along with Vardalos. Nia revealed that Tom Hanks’ wife, Rita Wilson, reportedly saw the play and suggested that Hanks produce the original movie. Nia Vardalos says she hung up when Tom Hanks called because she didn’t believe it was actually him back in 2001.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding’s sequel doesn’t have a release date yet, but with the massive following from the first film, we imagine it’ll be pushed to the front of the line once Vardalos finishes the sequel’s script.
