Hypable had the opportunity to chat with Muzz Khan about his time on the second season of ABC’s musical comedy Galavant and his upcoming role in Me Before You.

Galavant became a hit amongst fan and critics — Hypable included — when it premiered last year, before picking up a surprising renewal for its second season. Muzz Khan joined the cast for its reprisal, playing the part of Barry, Wormwood’s bumbling (but endearing) assistant.

We got to talk to Khan about his experiences on the Galavant set, his upcoming role as Syed in the hotly anticipated adaption of Me Before You and what’s next on the cards for this up-and-coming actor.

Was acting something you’d always aspired to do, or was there a particular catalyst for you getting into it?

Somewhat controversially, no! I didn’t have a clue what to do with my life – although I was always the class clown. But there WAS a catalyst in the form of the BBC. They came to our high school when I was in Year 10 to film an episode of Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. The producers wanted some school kids to be extras. I put my hand up and got picked. I was completely seduced by the cameras, actors, sound guys and the whole circus of it all. I thought, “This is beyond cool. I wanna do this! How hard could it be?” Oh, how naïve I was……

What attracted you to ‘Galavant’ as a project? Were you a fan of the show prior to landing the role as Barry?

It was the complete idiosyncrasy of it. There was nothing like it on TV. I found the whole concept to be completely unique and unlike anything I’d seen or auditioned for. It currently doesn’t air in the U.K., so I had to make do with clips and trailers online. After some extensive Google-stalking, it soon became apparent that this was a pretty refreshing and tantalizing piece of television. I couldn’t believe it when my agent told me I’d got it!

Barry certainly had an eventful journey over the course of season 2. Were there any moments for you that were especially memorable for the character?

Ha! You think so? It was probably not as eventful as some of the core leads, I’d say. Their twists and turns were quite something and riveting to watch! One of my most memorable bits was definitely doing the show number “Happiest Day of Your Life.” To be able to sink my teeth into an ensemble musical number was really eye-opening. I’d never done anything like it before on screen and found the whole process really insightful but also totally exhausting!

How about on set? What was the most enjoyable thing for you about working on ‘Galavant?’

Without a shadow of doubt, it’s got to be the camaraderie of the cast and crew. Hands down some of the friendliest, funniest and generous people I’ve ever worked with in my career. Everyone looked out for one other and the process of ‘play’ and ‘impro’ felt seemless. We just riffed and bounced off each other with such ease and simplicity. It’s not often that you get that level of relaxation and complicity in projects with such tight time constraints. They’ve got something really special there.

Unfortunately, Barry didn’t get the opportunity to belt out a solo. Is that something you’d like to see rectified in the third season – should ABC renew the show?

Ha, no he didn’t! But — yes — absolutely it’d be a real thrill, joy and honor to have a solo number. I would undoubtedly try and squeeze every drop of humor of it, though, given my impish ways! Probably more of a comedy turn than a Broadway showstopper!

If you could switch places with any of the characters in ‘Galavant,’ which role would you love to play?

In all the interviews I’ve done so far, I’ve always plucked for the Jester — as he’s a buffoon like Barry. But just for variety’s sake, let me say Madalena (played by Mallory Janson). There’s something really pertinent and fascinating playing someone obsessed with power and megalomania – and the behavior and strategies we exude and implement to try and achieve that level of power and status.

What would you like to see happen for Barry in a potential third season? We caught a glimpse of him at Isabella and Galavant’s wedding – is he poised to take over as chief wedding planner?

Haha! My lips are sealed! The producers and writers did hint at the wrap party that Barry could well become the chief wedding planner, following Wormwood’s death. But maybe they were just humoring me! We shall see. In terms of a possible season three, let’s see Barry get stuck in a love triangle and witness how his ineptitude manages to juggle the situation! Or not. There’s plenty of mileage in that, I reckon!

Looking beyond ‘Galavant,’ you’ll be starring alongside Emilia Clarke in the upcoming book-to-film adaption of ‘Me Before You.’ What was it like bringing Syed to life on the big screen?

It was a real honor. It always is when you portray somebody in print or a real life figure. I didn’t get a chance to read Jojo’s book before the shoot — just the shooting script. But I was reliably informed by my wife and pretty much EVERY female friend in my life that Syed and the rest of the characters were much-loved and widely-revered. It meant that on the day, I could put my own stamp on Syed and play him how I saw him, without getting too bogged down with how the book portrayed him.

How did your filming experiences differ between that and ‘Galavant?’ Was one project more rigorous and demanding than the other? Or we they both equally as challenging in their own ways?

Me Before You was such a quick turnaround. I filmed Syed in just one day, so had to go in and get the job done. Whereas with Galavant being filmed over a number of months, I had the utter joy of being able to experiment with Barry more and negotiate his trajectory with the writers, the actors, as well as in my own head. It’s the longest stretch that I’ve done on a show and it was a real privilege to be able to see him grow and get embedded into the world.

What about any other shows? Would there be any projects you’d love to be involved with? There’s rumors they’ll be looking for a new Doctor and companion soon…

Ha! I wouldn’t say ‘no’ to being the next Doctor. Big boots to fill but I’m pretty confident I could turn him into the most anarchic and quirkiest Doctor to date! I’m a big fan of Modern Family and am also really digging the plethora of Marvel spin-offs that they’re producing right now. If the phone call came, I’d jump at the chance.

Do you have any work lined up next? Or will you be returning to DJing in London for a while?

As with all actors, I’m busy auditioning for a number of projects and sending off self-tapes galore! I’ll be leaving for LA shortly and spending a couple of weeks there for pilot season this month (February). The rather brilliant Industry Entertainment have just started managing me, so I can’t wait to see how our relationship blossoms. I’m really pleased with where my career is at the moment and can’t wait to see what 2016 has in store…..
