The Muppets may be returning to television, as new reports reveal ABC is considering a new series starring Kermit and company.

According to Deadline, the new Muppets series “would be set behind the scenes of a late-night talk show.” That description reminds us of 30 Rock, the old Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin comedy on NBC set behind a late-night sketch show.

THR adds that the show sees the classic characters “gathering at ABC Studios for a meeting about the new Muppet Show, however, the show won’t move forward unless Miss Piggy signs on — only her current relationship with frequent love Kermit is on the rocks preventing that from happening. Early plans call for two celebrity cameos — including Miss Piggy’s current co-star — as well as new roles including Fozzie’s girlfriend and her parents.”

The show, should it take off, will be in good hands. The Big Bang Theory co-creator Bill Prady is writing the concept alongside Anger Management executive producer Bob Kushell. The latter will run the series due to Prady’s Big Bang Theory commitment. It will be co-produced by The Muppets Studios and ABC Studios.

THR says the show will likely go straight to series at ABC if it’s greenlit. Netflix had also expressed interest in the project.

As noted by Deadline, Prady has been deeply involved with the world of The Muppets for years. “He has written for seven different Muppet shows/specials, including The Jim Henson Hour, Muppet Classic Theater and a 2007 presentation for another potential Muppets TV series,” their report states.

The Muppets gang most recently starred in The Muppets Most Wanted, a sequel of sorts to the 2011 reboot The Muppets. The sequel didn’t perform as critically or financially well as the original, which may be why Kermit and Piggy are now turning their attention to a potential small screen return.

There’s been talk for years about a Muppets TV series being in development. In researching this story we found reports from May 2012 and early 2014. Maybe this time the plan will stick.

Is is time for a new ‘Muppets’ television series?

We would definitely tune in every week and like the concept described above.
