Disney+ has scrapped all plans to bring a scripted Muppets series to the streamer in exchange for an unscripted show.

Disney+ is bringing back a lot of our favorites to the exciting new streaming service, but it seems a new, scripted Muppets show won’t be one of them. Despite reports surrounding a scripted show, Disney+ has opted to go in a different direction.

According to Variety, Josh Gad, Adam Horowitz, and Edward Kitsis had been working on the new scripted show, and though the series was never formally announced, reports said the trio had been hard at work developing the show for some time. However, the reports indicate that the three ran into creative differences with new leadership at Muppets Studio.

Of course, this isn’t totally surprising. At D23, it was announced that the streamer would be bringing us Muppets Now, a short-form, unscripted series featuring the beloved puppet characters, which is certainly a diversion from the Gad-led series’ scripted vision.

The scripted series from Gad, Horowitz, and Kitsis was going to be the first attempt at bringing a scripted series back focusing on the group since the failed ABC mockumentary series The Muppets in 2016. It’s unclear what we can expect from Muppets Now, especially given the show’s unscripted hook, as a show with puppets feels like an unexpected outlet for improv and general unplanned humor and storytelling.

However, we’re glad to hear that Disney+ isn’t totally walking away from Kermit and the gang, as they’ve been staples of pop culture since they were first introduced back in the ’70s.

And while the recent attempt at bringing the characters back through television failed, their performance at the box office has proven that we’ll always have a special place in our heart for Kermit, Ms. Piggy, Fozzie, and the rest of their puppet friends. The films The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanted came out in 2011 and 2014, respectively, and raked in a combined $250 million at the box office.

It’s a shame that the Josh Gad-led series isn’t moving forward, but we’re excited to see what Disney+ has in store for us with Muppets Now. There isn’t a release date on the series just yet, but Disney+ is set to release on November 12.
