At the New York premiere of Game of Thrones this week, book author George R.R. Martin pointed out that a feature film may be the best way to end the series.
It was recently revealed that the show runners of Game of Thrones know the general ending of the series, and planned up to eight seasons. Now THR is reporting that George R.R. Martin is interested in a feature film to finish the series off.
“It all depends on how long the main series runs,” Martin explains. “Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”
It would absolutely make sense to have a feature film tie up the ending, since there are going to be so many things to include in the last few seasons it would be difficult seeing it all in a 10 episode run on HBO.
Martin also explains that a movie could also be made out of The Tales of Dunk and Egg, a series of three prequel novellas that take place 90 years before the events in Game of Thrones. “They could be the basis for [a film]. I have written these three stories, and I have about a dozen more.”
THR reports that Warner Bros. would be the ideal partner for a feature film, seeing as they released the two movies based off Sex and the City and are currently working on an Entourage film. The studio already has experience putting a gigantic dragon on screen via The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, so they would be a fitting partner to help bring Daenerys’ dragons to the big screen.
