For a show like Scream, the big question at the end of the day is, “Who is the Lakewood killer?” and this week’s episode may have finally answered it.

Scream season 2, episode 9, “The Orphanage,” did a lot to point us in the direction of Stavo Acosta as the Lakewood killer. To be fair, he’s been pretty creepy from the beginning, drawing those portraits of the Lakewood Six, the killer, and his victims. Not to mention one of his portraits, that of Seth Branson chained to the bed, would’ve been hard for him to imagine unless he was the killer or Brooke told him what she’d done. Plus Stavo had a Brandon James mask in his possession, and he was pretty defensive when his father confronted him about it.

But all of that could have been explained away as a macabre fascination with Lakewood’s haunting history. This week’s episode, however, gave us much stronger evidence, and the case for Stavo as the masked man is getting harder to ignore.

First up we have the story of how his friend was accidentally shot and killed right in front of him. Stavo played it cool until the cops showed up, and when they finally arrived, he was drawing the body in his sketchbook. We don’t know what actually happened between him and his friend, and we certainly don’t know for sure that it was actually an accident, but Stavo’s obsession with the dead is alarming to say the least.

Then there was the message scrawled in lipstick on Emma’s mirror. Normally I wouldn’t think twice about it, as the tape hanging from a lock of hair is much more alarming, but right before this scene we did witness Stavo stealing a tube of Brooke’s lipstick. It could absolutely be a coincidence, a huge red herring meant to steer us in the wrong direction, but the evidence against Stavo is quickly piling up.

It’s clear now that Sheriff Acosta is noticing the evidence as well, and he’s not ignoring it just because Stavo is his son. In fact, he has a whole file on the younger Acosta, which Stavo finds when he breaks into his father’s office. As the son of the sheriff, Stavo would have access to police files that could help him keep tabs on the investigation. He could choose to steer the police in a different direction, or use new information to help him pin down his victims.

Stavo uses information about Brooke’s dad to show her that Jake had been working for him and was on the way to a job the night he died. Brooke has become an object of near-obsession for Stavo, which relates back to the roses she found that ended up not being from Jake. Could Stavo be manipulating the residents of Lakewood in a way to best ensure Brooke became his?

Lastly, Scream 2×09 also presented us with the Face the Mask party, which Haley seemed to be a part of. She even knew the killer, though we didn’t get a look at his face before he pulled his mask down. Stavo and Haley would’ve known each other from school and even would’ve had time to conspire under the noses of the Lakewood Six. Stavo shows up at the party later, and only briefly, watching the crowd from afar. It’s definitely possible he donned that mask and killed Haley.

But even though all evidence seems to be pointing to Stavo, a lot of fans just aren’t buying it. There are plenty of other characters who are just as mysterious and shady the sheriff’s son. Looking through the #MTVScream hashtag on Twitter, I see a lot of people still pointing a finger at Kieran or Zoe. Even Emma has plenty of votes, considering this episode also made a strong case for her instability. Could she be secretly killing off the residents of Lakewood?

My main gripe with Stavo as the killer is that it’s too obvious. He’s been a main suspect since the beginning of the show, and if he does turn out to be the killer, it’s going to look too obvious in hindsight. I always thought his antics were a red herring, but perhaps that in and of itself is the red herring. It’s certainly something a show like Scream would try to pull of.
